VIRTUES OF A CFS VOLUNTEER
The eight-pointed star is the traditional insignia of the SA Country Fire Service (CFS), formerly known as the Emergency Fire Service (EFS).

The star is not unique to the CFS as it is recognised by fire services all over the world.
It is otherwise referred to as the Cross of Saint John which originally emerged from the Maltese Cross.
Used by the Knights of Saint John during the Crusades in Jerusalem, the points on the Maltese Cross represented eight different virtues of Knighthood:
• Tact • Loyalty • Dexterity • Observation • Sympathy • Explicitness • Gallantry • Perseverance
Over time, firefighters have adopted these same virtues bringing about a commonality between fire services all over the world.
In most cases the only difference between fire service insignias is the centrepiece, which is specific to the organisation.
The CFS Star is seen on the official uniform worn by volunteers and staff.
However, the CFS also has a corporate logo, which represents the State in Australia in which it serves and is displayed on all vehicles and infrastructure.

CFS VOLUNTEER NATIONAL PARKS PASS
Parks Passes Application Form - CLICK HERE.
Up to 2,000 CFS Volunteer Parks Passes will be distributed to CFS Volunteers who apply. This will be on a "first in" basis. The intent of the Parks Pass is to recognise the direct relationship between the CFS and our National Parks. The CFS Volunteers Association thanks DEH for this initiative, which we believe will be well received by our members. Applications will only be taken on the correct application form. This form will be posted on this website as of 4 March 2010. The Passes will be current for twelve months as of 1 April 2010.
The passes will be administered by the CFS Volunteers Association. The following eligibility criteria will apply:
• members will need to apply on the correct form (mail, fax or email. No telephone applications will be accepted) • 6 months minimum service as registered on TAS. • not available to cadet members of the brigades • active membership of their respective brigades.
Passes will be issued on a “first in” basis. As only 2,000 passes have been approved, members will need to apply early to ensure they receive a pass. If both husband and wife are members of the CFS, we would ask that only one partner apply as this will allow more families to access the passes. The pass will allow free entry to a range of National Parks for one car plus passengers where vehicle entry fees are applied. The cardholder must be present in the car.The pass will be numbered and will require that the vehicle registration number is clearly written on one side. The pass will need to be clearly visible on the vehicle dashboard.
Other Parks Concessions. Some Parks are considered to be “commercial operations”, and free entry will not be available. However discount concessions to these Parks have been made available under this scheme.
These include: • 25% concession on personal access and guided tours that are provided on National Parks (Cleland, Naracoorte Caves, Seal Bay etc) • 25% concession on Desert Park Pass • 50% concession on Kangaroo Island Pass.
To purchase these passes with the discount concession, your CFS Parks Pass must be produced and must have been signed by you. It will need to be produced in conjunction with some photo identification to gain access to these concession prices. These entitlements can only be provided to the emergency services volunteer and their immediate family (spouse and children) when the volunteer is present, which makes the entitlement card and the photo identification central to the application of the entitlement.

The CFSVA hopes that volunteers will make use of these passes and that they are seen as a small reward for the work done on National Parks. The Association will write to each Parks Pass holder towards the end of the 12 months to ascertain a satisfaction rating, and to also measure how many times the pass was used. | Posted on Thursday, March 04, 2010 (Archive on Thursday, March 11, 2010)
